Run a textile mill on Finocket

Costing from yarn to finished saree: looms weave grey fabric, dyeing and printing go out as job work and come back as a cost line, and the credit limit warns at invoice entry when an agent or trader in the Surat market is over it.

What you set up

Textile manufacturing businesses run on the Growth plan, which turns on 27 modules:

Turn any of these off if you don't need them - see setting Finocket up for your trade for the two decisions worth getting right on day one.

What you'll do day to day

The bill of materials is the costing

Signed in as a staff member, open /manufacturing?tab=boms. Open the Georgette Printed Saree BOM: raw materials and routing roll up into one cost per unit of printed sarees.

A work order from plan to finished stock

Signed in as a staff member, open /manufacturing?tab=workorders. One draft, one in progress, one completed - start a draft and walk it through its routing steps.

Production consumes raw, yields finished

Signed in as a staff member, open /manufacturing?tab=production. A completed run: raw material out, finished goods in at the rolled-up cost, labour from the work centres included.

Capacity by work centre

Signed in as a staff member, open /manufacturing?tab=capacity. Which work centre is the bottleneck this week, from the open work orders' routing minutes.

Yarn to grey to saree

Signed in as a staff member, open /inventory. Yarn in kg, grey fabric in metres, sarees in pieces - each stage's stock after the runs that moved it.

Job work that comes back as cost

Signed in as the accountant, open /expenses. The process-house bill for printing, TDS 194C (new Act s.393(1) 6(i)) deducted, itemised against the run.

A Surat mill that knows the cost of a saree from the yarn

Before: Grey fabric and finished sarees costed separately, dyeing job work reconciled at month end, and traders across India on informal credit.

With Finocket: A two-stage BOM (yarn to grey, grey to saree), dyeing booked as job work with TDS, and interstate trader invoices with e-way bills.

(Sample business: Suryakiran Textile Mills, a demo textile manufacturing workspace in Surat, Gujarat - not a real customer.)

Sending cloth out to a dye house, and getting it back

Raise an order, correct it, cancel it

Open Manufacturing, tap Job work and find Job-work orders. Choose the Job worker or principal, type the Order no., the Process (nature of job work) such as dyeing or printing, and Expected back by, then tap Save. If you mistyped the number or the date, tap Edit on that order, change it and tap Update order. An order's status is not typed: it reads Open while any cloth you sent on it is still out and closes once all of it is back. Cancel order is offered only when nothing sent on the order is still at the job worker; if some is, the order says so, and you record the return first. A cancelled order has Reopen order. There is no delete: a cancelled order keeps the record your challans cite.

Send, receive, and see what is lying where

Under Record a job-work movement you record each challan out and each receipt back, with a Lot / dye lot on the line. The detail of each movement is in the Manufacturing guide. Material at job workers then shows what is still yours at each house and how long it has been out, and At job workers by lot shows, for each lot, the metres still open, the second quantity (kilograms beside metres) and the days out. Cloth the house reports as shrinkage is recorded as a loss, so the lot closes at what actually came back.

The Return clock counts the days left to bring goods back or invoice them, and ITC-04 preparation prepares the figures from your challans for you and your chartered accountant to check. Whether and when a return may rely on either is for your chartered accountant.

The agent's commission

Type the agent or broker and the commission percent on the trader's invoice (the Agent / broker and Agent commission fields), then open Agent commission from Manufacturing. It works the commission on what has been collected on each invoice, with the TDS and the net, and leaves out any payment in another currency.

What prints on the bill

Once you approve the textile setup, your invoices use the Distributor & trader template. Each line prints the Lot no., Shade, Roll / taka no. and Pieces you typed on it, in its own column; a column stays out of a bill whose lines carry none of it. Each item also takes a picture of the design or shade.

Try it with sample data

Where sample data is switched on, a new workspace set up for a textile mill or a process house is offered a sample workspace in metres: grey cloth, dye, a dyed and a printed fabric, and two sales. Every sample row is marked [SAMPLE] and can be cleared in one step, leaving anything you added yourself.

A principal's grey fabric, the job charge and process loss

Recording a principal's stock

Open Manufacturing and tap Principal's stock. This is grey fabric your customers send you to process. It is theirs, not yours, so it is never valued in your stock. What you hold for each principal shows the balance per principal and item.

Under Record a step, pick the Step:

  • Received from the principal. Fabric arrives at your floor.
  • Processed into another item. Also pick the Processed item and the Processed quantity.
  • Sent back to the principal. The processed fabric goes back.

Choose the principal, the grey fabric item, the quantity and the date, add a note such as the lot or challan number, and tap Record. Keep each principal's fabric on an item of its own: an item that holds your own stock is refused. Recording a step and billing need a role that can make changes; others see the balances and entries only.

Billing the job charge

On the same screen, Bill a job charge bills the principal for the work. Pick Charge by (Per metre or Per kg), type the metres or kilograms processed and the rate, check the Line description, and tap Open the bill. A new invoice opens with that line filled in; check it and save it there. Each entry under Latest entries also has Bill job charge. No GST rate is filled in on the line: you pick it on the bill, with your CA.

Recording process loss on a run

On the Batches & job cards tab of Manufacturing, a production run's output lines can also be Seconds (lower-grade fabric), Shrinkage or Short length. Once a run has any of these, its card shows the good metres, seconds, shrinkage and short length, and the Process loss: shrinkage and short length as a share of the metres processed, with seconds as a share of their own. These are quantities only. The card does not yet work the loss into a cost per good metre.
